Empowerment: The Shift from Control to Trust
- blog28 Mar 2025

In the corporate world, micromanagement has been shown to stifle creativity and suffocate motivation while empowerment has proven to enhance productivity and creativity and increase job satisfaction levels.
Empowerment is granting members the authority and freedom to plan and execute their work and make decisions to achieve goals. It is a key driver in unlocking employees’ full potential by fostering a culture of ownership and accountability at work.
Empowerment succeeds because it shifts focus from control to trust and ignites self-motivation. Members who feel trusted, valued, and accountable for their contributions tend to perform better. As a leader of several businesses, I emphasize the key aspect of empowering teams and its impact on business success.
Communicate clearly, provide resources and bet on people
Cultivating a culture of ownership at work is essential to ensure a productive and motivated workforce. I achieve this through clear communication and by providing resources to ensure each team member understands their roles, responsibilities, and organizational expectations. I bet on people and their abilities and make it clear I’m there to support them. Given autonomy, clear expectations, and necessary resources, employees own their work and develop a sense of purpose within the organization.
Celebrate team successes and involve in decision-making
Whenever an individual or team achieves their targets or goals, no matter how small, I make it a point to celebrate their success. When things don’t go as planned, I encourage members to learn from failures and incorporate those lessons into their next attempts. I also involve members in the decision-making processes to make them feel valued and responsible for the outcomes.
Recognize the importance of delegation and find effective ways to implement it
Many leaders hesitate to delegate tasks because they believe they can handle them best. Learning to delegate takes time, and you must accept it’s a part of your role. When you find people who are closely aligned with your style of working (60-70 percent), you need to trust them and give them the tools to take over.
I recommend using a technique where I ask team members a series of questions. First, I ask “What will this do?” three times to help them grasp the bigger picture behind the task. Next I inquire “How will you do it?” three times to ensure they understand the process. Finally I ask “By when will you do this?” to establish a deadline and set accountability for completion.
The impact of team empowerment on business success
Over the years, team empowerment has significantly contributed towards our business’s overall success. I believe that creating new leaders within the organization has accelerated our growth while freeing up time for me to focus on business strategy and expansion. I am proud to say that our company E-Movers has expanded geographically to four locations around the world. This achievement is attributed to the collaborative efforts and innovative solutions of our empowered team members. I also recognize that their diverse perspectives at the time of decision-making have led me to better solutions that I couldn’t have devised alone.
As a leader, I iterate that it is essential to transition from ‘doing it yourself’ to ‘trusting others to do it for you’. Once you embrace this shift, you’ll master the art of growing teams.
